Hormonal Balance – Diagnostic Testing for Hair Loss – Modesto, CA*

5 Procedures ( View All )

Overview

Do you have unexplained hair loss? At the Northern California Hair Restoration Centers in Lodi, Modesto, and Stockton, Drs. Theodore Staahl (our board-certified facial plastic surgeon) and Kimberly Cockerham (our board-certified oculofacial plastic surgeon) can test the hormonal levels of the thyroid, sex hormones, and adrenals for imbalances. Why? Hormone imbalances in both men and women can interfere with the normal hair growth cycle, causing more follicles to be in the resting stage. We work in conjunction with Dr. Marie Cottman with the Pacific Compounding Pharmacy in Stockton to optimize your hormonal balance with appropriate replacement therapy.

As each patient is unique, we will provide a private consultation in our Lodi, Modesto or Stockton offices to discuss your health history, family medical history, current medications, lifestyle habits, diet, and more to figure out the source of your hair loss. If it is warranted, Drs. Staahl or Cockerham may order saliva or blood testing to determine the best course of action for your treatment. If it is determined that you're too low or too high on certain hormones, our doctors can prescribe the appropriate medication to supplement the deficit.

Female Hormones to Test

  • Thyroid panel (measurements of T3, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies)
  • Insulin
  • Estrogen
  • Androgen

Male Hormones To Test

  • Thyroid panel (measurements of T3, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies)
  • Insulin
  • Testosterone
  • Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)

Candidates for Testing

If you are experiencing hair loss and have not had a hormone panel drawn for analysis, you are not getting a thorough assessment of why you have hair loss. When some of our patients are experiencing both hormonal imbalance and hair loss, he or she has a great chance of not feeling well either. When exercise, diet, and healthy sleeping patterns are still not helping you feel better, it is a great indication your hormones are unstable. This can be especially frustrating for patients who are compliant with their treatment. Hormone therapy with lifestyle modifications may make a difference in how you look and feel. All men and women are great candidates for testing.

Testing For Hormone Imbalances

We may recommend one or a combination of tests to run in order to help diagnose a hormone imbalance. Sex hormones and cortisol can be checked with a saliva test. Thyroid hormone levels will require a blood draw.  Hormones do not need to be tested too frequently. You can expect to have testing performed before treatment to get your baseline numbers or levels, and then again in three months to see the effects of using an established hormone replacement regimen. Once your hormones are in balance with positive therapeutic outcomes, testing once a year will suffice.

Other Considerations

While you can have your medications filled at the pharmacy of your choice, Drs. Staahl and Cockerham can refer you to the Pacific Compounding Pharmacy in Stockton, CA. At this compounding pharmacy, they can customize your hormone treatment to fine tune each medication for your specific needs (not as a one-size-fits-all medication).
